Kullu and Manali
Abode of all newly wed couples in North India!
After my marriage ,in March 2006, I came to Delhi with my husband. In May, we set off for our honeymoon and the destination was no surprise, the one and only Kullu Manali.Manali is actually a hill station in the Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh.
We set off from Delhi on a Friday evening, by a Himachal State transport Volvo Bus.Distance to Manali is about 585km,covered in 14 hrs, time being totally dependent on road conditions.Since its a valley there are chances of frequent landslides causing roadblocks. We were not spared either, caught in severetraffic jams, and we reached Manali, the next day afternoon. There is no dearth of hotels and resorts in Manali, and we finally settled in one.
After refreshing ourselves, in the evening we went for a stroll down town. The major attraction in Manali, apart from several monasteries and temples, are Solang Valley and Rahtong Pass.
Solang Valley(14km) is famous for its winter sports. Parachuting, paragliding and skating being some of them.
Rohtang Pass (52 km) : Located on the National Highway to Leh, Ladakh,Rohtang Pass is a crucial link on the old trade route. The Rohtang Pass is at height of 3978 m. Rohtang Pass is best visitable between May/June to October/November. Adventure sports such as skiing, mountain biking and paragliding can be enjoyed at this place.
We booked a shared taxi to take us to the Rohtang Pass. One needs a permit to travel on Rohtang pass from the Indian Army, ensuring safety as well as movement of vehicles.
We set off early in the next morning, so as to get right up to the Snow point, in time.Rohtang Pass is the 'Highest Jeepable Road in the World' and offers spectacular views of the Himalayas. This was our first visit to Himalayas, and we were totally spellbound. 'Skiing Dress' is available but it’s a good idea to make your own arrangement beforehand. We reached the snow point by afternoon and spent a few of the most memorable hours of our life there.
By 5 in the evening we were back at Manali.Next day morning we hired a taxi to take us to Kullu. The major attraction there was Manikaran, about 45 km from kullu.
Manikaran is a pilgrimage centre for Hindus and Sikhs. This small town attracts tourists visiting Manali and Kullu to its hot springs and piligrim centres.
Our car went along the Parvati Valley and took us to a Gurudwara. For the forst time ever I saw a what a Hot Spring was.All the food prepared for the devotees were being cooked on this hot water spring. An entirely new experience.Since the water in the spring is considered to be holy because of its curative powers, we collected some in a small can.
From Manikaran we soon set off to Kullu town to catch our bus Back to Delhi. Our beautiful honeymoon trip ended there.Next day morning we were in delhi, back to our real life!
Manali was a dream. a beautiful beginning of our new life together!
